The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation is reviewing passing zones in areas with speed limits of 45 mph or higher, considering converting these sections of roadway to no-passing zones in an effort to increase safety.

A couple of those areas are on the Big Island.

Motorists are advised that signs are being installed and pavement markings added this week in two areas of Daniel K. Inouye Highway, formerly Saddle Road, to change them to no-passing zones.

The sections between mile posts 16.5 and 17.5 as well as 23.5 and 26.1 will be changed.

Work to install signs and add the double yellow center stripe indicating the new no-passing zones — which began Monday — will require a single-lane closure and contraflow.

Weather permitting, work is planned for 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. through most of this week and should be completed Thursday.
