Kurtistown man caught driving truck with loaded gun granted supervised release
A 30-year-old man from Kurtistown was approved for supervised release this week after being arrested and charged with four felony offenses for driving a truck with a loaded revolver earlier this month.
The defendant, Beau De Dier, was reportedly in possession of a loaded Ruger .357 caliber revolver while driving a Dodge Ram pickup truck on Kanoelehua Avenue in Hilo on June 13, 2024.
The County of Hawaiʻi Office of the Prosecuting Attorney made the announcement in the following statement on June 21:
De Dier was contacted on a routine traffic stop by members of South Hilo Patrol on Stainback Highway. According to police reports, following the execution of a search warrant, officers recovered a loaded Ruger GP100 .357 caliber revolver and a high
capacity .40 caliber Glock magazine.
De Dier made his initial appearance in Hilo District Court on Monday afternoon. Over
Prosecutors’ objections, the Hilo District Court judge released him on supervised release and
ordered him to appear for a preliminary hearing on July 1, 2024.
As the Complaint alleges, De Dier is charged with Place to Keep Pistol or Revolver,
Carrying or Possessing a Loaded Firearm on a Public Highway, Ownership or Possession of
Firearm Prohibited, and Ownership or Possession of Ammunition Prohibited. All of these
offenses are class B felony offenses which carry a penalty of either a ten-year prison term or four years probation and up to eighteen months in jail.
The charges are merely allegations, and the Defendant is presumed innocent unless and
until proven guilty.
The traffic stop and case was initiated by Officer Andrew Springer, South Hilo Patrol.
The felony investigation was led by Detective David Po‘ohina, Area I Criminal Investigation
Section, Hawai‘i Police Department. The case is being prosecuted by Deputy Prosecuting
Attorney Herbert Mukai.
