Update: Roads reopen in Kohala after crews clear debris from flooding

9:43 a.m. Update May 11: Queen Ka‘ahumanu Highway is now open in South Kohala between mile markers 67 and 70. Akoni Pule Highway is anticipated to re-open shortly as crews continue clearing debris. 

A flash flood watch remains in place throughout the state till 8 p.m.

7:51 a.m. update May 11: The flash flood warning has been canceled in Kohala, however, Highway 270 [Akoni Pule Highway] and Highway 19 [Queen Ka’ahumanu] remain closed in the Kawaihae area due to ponding water and large debris.

The National Weather Service expects the warning to be lifted at 7:15 a.m. but could be extended if conditions persist.

At 4:18 a.m., Rain was falling at a rate of 2 to 3 inches per hour. Highway 270 near mile marker 5 near Kawaihae Harbor is currently closed due to flooding. Area stream gauges remain elevated.

Additionally, all lanes are closed at the Kawaihae Road and the Queen Ka‘ahumanu Highway intersection due to flooding at the bridges on both sides of the intersection. Use alternative routes.

Flooding in drainages, streams, rivers, roads, properties, and other low-lying areas is expected. Public road closures are possible in some areas. Landslides are possible in steep terrain.

Some locations that will experience flash flooding include Waikōloa Village, Kapa‘au, Honoka‘a, Kohala Ranch, Kawaihae, Pololu Valley, Waimanu Valley, Kamuela, Waipi‘o Valley, Puako, Halaula, Kukuihaele, Hāwī, Mauna Lani, Waikōloa Beach and Mahukona.
