Water shut off scheduled in North Hilo for system improvements

Water will be temporarily turned off in certain portions of Hilo from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on April 30, 2024, to make system improvements, according to the Department of Water Supply. A potable water tanker for the public’s use will be stationed at the entrance to the Pāpa‘aloa Elderly Housing apartment complex.

Water will be shut off along Old Māmalahoa Highway between Pāoaʻaloa Store and Kekoʻa Camp, and any side roads and lanes; Pāpaʻaloa, North Hilo, Hawaiʻi.


Upon resumption of water service. the waterlines will be flushed and cleaned, during which time you may notice turbid and/or discolored water.


You may also notice trapped air in your plumbing, which will be released as you initially use water.

Affected customers are asked to take any and all precautions necessary to protect their property and facilities including, but not limited to, disabling electrical power to pumps and/or any other devices whose normal operation may be dependent on water pressure and/or water supply, and which might be damaged if automatically energized during the water shut-off.


The department asked the public to pardon this temporary inconvenience and has directed questions to Mr. William O’Neil or Mr. Darroll Naungayan, District Supervisors, at (808) 887-3030.
