A wind advisory is issued for Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa summits until 6 a.m. Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service in Honolulu, a gradient between a trough passing north of the islands and a high to the southwest will bring strong winds to the summits and upper slopes of the Big Island beginning tonight.

West winds of 30 to 45 mph are expected with gusts near 60 mph.

Winds this strong can make driving and walking difficult. The winds can forcefully open doors and damage hinges or slam doors shut, possibly causing injuries.

Consider postponing travel to the summits until conditions improve. If you must travel to the summits, use extra caution when walking and driving. Be careful opening or closing doors.
