Update: West Hawai‘i flood advisory extended through Tuesday evening

4 p.m. March 6 update: As flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues, the National Weather Service has extended its flood advisory for West Hawai‘i till 6:15 p.m.

At 3:56 p.m., radar indicated areas of moderate to heavy rain, and a few thunderstorms, over the lower Kona slopes from Kailua-Kona to Hawaiian Ocean View. The heaviest showers are producing rainfall rates between one and two inches per hour.

The flood advisory may be extended beyond 6:15 p.m. if flooding persists.

4:17 p.m. March 5 update: A flood advisory was issued for West Hawai‘i till 6:15 p.m.

Some locations that will experience flooding include Kailua-Kona, Captain Cook, Honaunau, Kealakekua, Kainaliu, Honalo, Kahaluu-Keauhou, Holualoa, Kalaoa, Milolii, Hawaii Volcanoes Park Kahuku Unit and Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport.

At 1:08 p.m., radar indicated heavy rain over the lower Kona slopes from Keahole Point to Miloli‘i, with the heaviest showers producing rainfall rates between 1 and 2 inches per hour.

Some locations that will experience flooding include Kailua-Kona, Captain Cook, Hōnaunau, Kealakekua, Kainaliu, Honalo, Kahalu‘u-Keauhou, Hōlualoa, Hawaiian Ocean View, Kalaoa, Miloli‘i, Hawai‘i Volcanoes Park Kahuku Unit and Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport.

Impacts include minor flooding on roads, poor drainage areas, and in streams. This advisory may need to be extended if flooding persists.
