Update: High wind warning for Big Island summits extended
8:49 a.m. Feb. 12 update: A high wind warning for Big Island summits is extended till 6 a.m. Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Honolulu, northwest winds of 50 to 60 mph are expected with gusts around 75 mph.
Winds this strong can make driving and walking dangerous. The winds can forcefully open doors and damage hinges or slam doors shut, possibly causing injuries.
Original post: The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a high wind warning in effect from 6 p.m. today through 6 p.m. Monday for the summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa on the Big Island.
A gradient between a trough aloft to the northeast and a ridge to the west will bring dangerously strong west winds to the summits. West winds of up to 60 mph, with localized gusts of up to 70 mph, are forecast.
Winds this strong can make driving and walking dangerous. The winds also can forcefully open doors and damage hinges or slam doors shut, possibly causing injuries.
The public is advised to be prepared for road closures and postpone travel to the summits until conditions improve.
