The electricity utility is reporting via the social media that 4,762 customers in ʻĀinaloa, Pāhoa and other parts of the island were without power as of about 9 a.m.

As of about 9:10, the utility reports 2,978 customers are without power in Upper ʻĀinaloa, Captain Cook to Hōnaunau and from Kawaihae Road to Lindsey Road in Waimea and Halaʻula Mill Road in North Hawaiʻi.

Another 2,403 customers from Mahukona along ʻAkoni Pule Highway to Old Mill Stack Road/Hawi Road/Kapaʻau Road in North Hawaiʻi and Hawaiian Paradise Park/Orchidland in Puna are also without power as of 9:20 a.m.

Hawaiian Electric says its combustion turbine units Kanoelehua CT-1 and Puna CT-3, which normally supply about 32 megawatts of power, tripped offline resulting in the need to load shed and force power outages around the island.

Crews are aware of the issues and outages and are responding.

Hawaiian Electric is initiating 30-minute rolling outages in parts of the island because of the unexpected loss of the generators and wind resources being near zero.

The Hill 5 unit is under repair and Hāmākua Energy, island’s largest generator, is also not at full output and undergoing repairs.

The brief emergency outages are being initiated to prevent an even greater number of customers from losing power. The impacted areas and the timing of the outages are based on the amount of electric demand that needs to be reduced.

Last night’s generator fire at Hawaiian Electric’s Panaʻewa substation is not related today’s generation shortfall.
