Wind advisory in effect for portions of the Big Island

A wind advisory for Kohala, Kona, Ka‘ū Districts as well as the island Interiors is building now through Friday.  In addition, a high wind warning was issued for the mauna summits.  

 A cold front is moving in from the northwest and will potentially bring heavy showers and thunderstorms. 

A large swell is approaching from the north and northwest which, in conjunction with higher-than-normal tides, will create dangerous conditions for north-facing shores.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu states the advisory is in place till 6 p.m. on Friday.

West winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts near 50 mph are expected. Winds this strong can tear off shingles, knock down tree branches, blow away tents and awnings and make it difficult to steer, especially for drivers of high-profile vehicles.

The public is advised to watch out for falling tree branches when walking or driving. Make sure tents and awnings are secure or take them down. Be prepared for power outages.
