Update: Flood advisory canceled for Ka‘ū and Puna Districts

12:05 p.m. update on Jan. 7: The flood advisory for Ka‘ū and Puna Districts is canceled. However, a flood watch remains in place for the entire state till 6 p.m.

7:10 a.m. update on Jan. 7: The flood advisory has been extended till 10:30 a.m. for Puna and Ka‘ū Districts.

At 7:05 a.m., radar and automated rain gauges showed moderate to locally heavy showers developing and moving ashore over the southeast slopes of the Kau and Puna Districts.

Rain was falling at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour.

This advisory may need to be extended beyond 10:30 a.m. if flooding persists.

Original post: A flood advisory is in effect until 7:30 a.m. for Ka‘ū and Puna Districts.

At 4:19 a.m., radar showed moderate to locally heavy showers developing and moving ashore over the southeast slopes of the Ka‘ū and Puna Districts.

Rain was falling at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour. Locations that will experience flooding include Hawaiian Paradise Park, Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park, Volcano, Glenwood, Wood Valley, Mountain View, Pāhala, Hawaiian Acres, Punalu‘u Beach, Orchidlands Estates, Kawa Flats, Pahoa, Kea‘au, Nā‘ālehu, Fern Forest, Eden Roc, Fern Acres, Kalapana and Kurtistown.

Impacts include minor flooding on roads, poor drainage areas and streams.

This advisory may need to be extended beyond 7:30 a.m. if flooding persists.
