The Hawai‘i Police Department continued during the week from Christmas to New Year’s its crackdown on motorists who drive under the influence of an intoxicant, arresting 18 Big Island drivers for DUI.
Eight of the drivers arrested from Dec. 25-31 also were involved in traffic collisions. Two of the drivers were younger than 21 years old.
Those arrests brought the total number of DUI arrests for 2023 on the island to 954 compared with 979 in 2022. That is a decrease of 2.6%.
Hawai‘i Police Department’s Traffic Services Section also reviewed all updated crashes and found 843 major collisions for 2023 compared with 846 in 2022, a decrease of 0.35%.

There were 14 fatal crashes, resulting in 15 fatalities, in 2023 compared with 30 fatal crashes, resulting in 33 fatalities in 2022. This represents a decrease of 54.8% for fatal crashes and 54.5% for fatalities.
The non-traffic fatality count, those that do not happen on a public roadway, for last year was 1 compared with none in 2022.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
