Big Island police investigating after man is shot in his Hawaiian Acres driveway

Hawai‘i Island police are investigating the shooting of a 39-year-old man in upper Puna.

Shortly after 2:15 p.m. Dec. 23, Puna patrol officers responded to a residence in the 16-1600 block of Koloa Maoli Road (Road 9) in Hawaiian Acres after receiving a report about a man who was shot. Responding officers found the victim unconscious on the ground in the driveway at his residence and being tended to by several acquaintances.

The man was transported by ambulance to the emergency room at Hilo Medical Center, where he remained in critical condition as of Saturday night.

Hawai‘i Police Department detectives with the Area I Criminal Investigation Section responded to the scene, as well as to the hospital, to continue the investigation, which is classified as a second-degree attempted murder.

Witnesses who were visiting the victim’s residence told police that a vehicle drove partially up the driveway and the victim was shot when he went to ask who was there.

Police have not yet identified a suspect or motive in this case; however, they continue to conduct interviews and search for leads.
