Big Island police investigating assault in Hilo that sent 4 people to the hospital
Hawai‘i Police Department detectives are investigating following a reported fight Friday afternoon on Rainbow Drive in Hilo that included a woman being struck and knocked unconscious by a bat and three men being stabbed.
Hilo patrol officers responded at 2:06 p.m. Friday to the 100 block of Rainbow Drive to an incident in which two men were reported fighting in the roadway with one of the men holding a bat. It was also reported that someone was stabbed and two men were seen leaving the scene in a pickup truck.
Upon their arrival at the scene, officers located a 28-year-old Hilo woman who was unconscious.
Officers also contacted a 28-year-old Hilo man who reported a pickup occupied by two men and a juvenile male had driven up to him and the female, with one of the men exiting the vehicle and striking the woman in the head with a bad, causing her to fall to the ground unconscious.
The male victim said that while he was trying to help the woman he was stabbed in the right leg by one of the men from the pickup. He added that he used a knife to defend himself.
The two male suspects then got back into the pickup and left.
Hawai‘i Fire Department medics responded and transported the male and female to Hilo Medical Center for treatment.
As officers were investigating the incident, it was reported that two men arrived at the Hilo Medical Center emergency room in a pickup truck, both saying they were stabbed.
Hawai‘i Police Department Area I Criminal Investigation Section detectives responded to the scene and Hilo Medical Center to continue the investigation, which is classified as a second-degree assault.
The initial male and female victims were treated for non-life threatening injures and released from the hospital.
The two men in the truck had surgery for their injuries and remain hospitalized in stable condition. The vehicle they were operating was recovered as evidence.
The juvenile was interviewed by detectives and released to a family member.
No arrests have been made at this time. Detectives continue to investigate.
