The National Weather Advisory in Honolulu extended the high surf advisory to 6 p.m. Thursday for east-facing shores of the Big Island.

Surf is expected to be 8 to 12 feet. Officials warn of strong breaking waves and strong currents that will make swimming dangerous.

Beachgoers are advised to heed advice from ocean safety officials before going out into the water.
