Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park announces flight operations for November 2023:  

November 1 between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. for survey and control of invasive Guinea grass along Keauhou trail from 2,400-ft. elevation to sea level.  

November 1 & 3 between 6:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. for ʻuaʻu (Hawaiian petrel) monitoring on Mauna Loa. between 4,000- and 9,000-ft. elevation.  


November 13,16, 27 & 30 between 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. for trail and campground/cabin maintenance at Kaʻaha and Pepeiao campgrounds between 126- and 2,276-ft. elevation.

November 15 between 6:30 a.m. and 7 a.m. for fence assessment along Kahuku East Unit at 6,000-ft elevation.  

November 29 between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. for fountain grass control in the Great Crack area at 500-ft. elevation. 

November 29 & 30 between 6:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. for ʻuaʻu (Hawaiian petrel) monitoring on Mauna Loa between 4,000- and 9,000-ft. elevation.

USGS HVO may conduct additional flight operations over Kīlauea and Mauna Loa to assess volcanic activity and maintain instrumentation.  

The park regrets any noise impact to residents and park visitors. Dates and times are subject to change based on aircraft availability and weather.  

Management of the park requires the use of aircraft to monitor and research volcanic activity, conduct search-and-rescue missions and law enforcement operations, support management of natural and cultural resources, and to maintain backcountry facilities.
