The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a fire weather watch for leeward areas of Hawai‘i County.

The watch is in effect from Sunday morning through Monday afternoon.

East winds of 15 to 25 mph are expected during this with low relative humidity dropping to near 40% Sunday afternoon into Monday afternoon.

The combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and dry fuels can contribute to extreme fire behavior. Any fires that develop could spread rapidly. The National Weather Service says a fire weather watch does not predict the potential for new fire starts.

Should a red flag warning be issued, outdoor burning is not recommended. It is recommended to delay activities that could throw off sparks until the wind dies down.
