No injuries were reported following an early morning cooking fire at a restaurant in the Hilo Shopping Center and Annex off Kekuanaoa Street.

According to Hawai‘i Fire Department, a security guard discovered a small blaze coming from Kamana Indian Cuisine. Firefighters responded to the eatery at 1:23 a.m. Upon arrival, flames were visible from the front door in the kitchen area.

After going inside to attack the fire, crews found that a propane burner was engulfing a large rice pot with flames. The fire was put out within about 10 minutes of their arrival.

Deputy Fire Chief Eric Moller said the fire could’ve been much worse if it hadn’t been discovered by the security guard.
