Update: Hale Nani furlough inmate back in custody

Update at 8:15 p.m.: The Hawai‘i Police Department reports that Mark Gordon Kahalewai turned himself in to police on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m.

Kahalewai had been sought by police since Friday afternoon, when he failed to return to the Hale Nani Correction Facility in Hilo after being granted temporary furlough release.

Kahalewai will be processed by police, and released back to the custody of the Department of Public Safety at the Hawai’i Community Correctional Center (HCCC).

Original story published at 3:51 p.m.: Hawai‘i Island police request the public’s assistance in locating 65-year-old Mark Gordon Kahalewai, a Hale Nani Correctional Facility inmate who failed to return from furlough.
 
Kahalewai was last seen on Sept. 1 at approximately 10 a.m., when he left the facility for a scheduled furlough. He failed to return to the facility at 2 p.m., as so ordered. 
 
Kahalewai is described as 5 feet 9 inches tall, 210 pounds, with a shaved head and brown eyes. He previously had a Honolulu address.
