Effective immediately and until further notice, South Kohala water customers served by the Lālāmilo Water System have been asked to reduce their water use by at least 10%.

Water conservation is necessary because multiple South Kohala brush fires have caused water consumption from the system to exceed the Department of Water Supply’s pumping capabilities.

Affected areas include Puakō along with Kawaihae Village to Kawaihae harbor and industrial area. Resorts impacted include: Mauna Lani, Fairmont Orchid, Hāpuna Prince, Mauna Kea Beach Hotel and adjacent subdivisions and developments.

Status updates will be issued as necessary and made available on the DWS’ website, www.hawaiidws.org.

Performing the following steps will help to conserve water:

  • Wash only full loads of laundry and dishes
  • Check faucets and pipes for leaks
  • Do not let water run when washing hands, shaving, or brushing teeth
  • Reduce showering times

All affected water customers should limit water use for dust control and irrigation. Find other water-saving tips by clicking on the “Conservation” tab at www.hawaiidws.org.

To reach the Department of Water Supply, call 808-887-3030 or 808-961-8050 during normal business hours, 808-961-8790 for after-hour emergencies, or email: dws@hawaiidws.org.
