“Legacy of Pāʻū” documentary premieres Friday at Kahilu Theatre in Waimea

Kahilu.TV will premiere its first original documentary film, “Legacy of Pāʻū with Barbara Nobriga,” at Kahilu Theatre in Waimea on June 16.

The film showcases the legacy of Barbara Nobriga and the art of pā’ū wrapping. Nobriga has devoted 55 years to preserving and perpetuating the art of pā’ū, always organizing the King Kamehameha Day parade in Kona.

The 23-minute documentary features details of the pā’ū wrapping process, an in-depth interview with Nobriga, and footage from the King Kamehameha Day parade — where elegant riders show off local flowers and beautiful pā’ū wrappings. The film also is an intimate look into the hard work that goes into preserving this historical and culturally significant art form.

Following the documentary premiere, Kahilu board president Kapena Alapaʻi will host a brief talk story interview with Nobriga and Kahilu.TV producer Adam Palya.

Admission is free, and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. There also will be a no-host bar — whiskey drinks will be provided by FORC, with beer and wine provided by Kahilu. Patrons may also enjoy the current exhibit, Legacies: Paniolo of Waimea, in the Hāmākua and Simperman Galleries.
