18 motorists arrested for DUI during week of May 1-7

Police continue their crackdown on motorists who drive under the influence of an intoxicant on Big Island roadways.

Eighteen motorists were arrested for DUI during the week of May 1-7. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic collisions. One of the motorists arrested was younger than 21 years old.

So far this year, there have been 355 DUI arrests on the Big Island compared with 372 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4.6 percent.

Hawai‘i Police Department’s Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 311 major collisions so far this year compared with 272 during the same period last year, an increase of 14.3 percent.

To date in 2023, there have been seven fatal crashes, resulting in eight fatalities, compared with 11 fatal crashes, resulting in 13 fatalities, by this time last year. That represents a decrease of 36.4 percent for fatal crashes and 38.5 percent for fatalities.
