Youth invited to register for Junior Lifeguard Program
Hawai‘i Island youth will have an opportunity to learn how to be a lifeguard during Hawai‘i Fire Department’s Junior Lifeguard Program this summer.
The free program will take place at three West Hawai‘i beaches — Kahalu‘u Beach Park, Kua Bay Beach Park and Hapuna Beach State Park. Registration and a swim test will be held on June 17 at 9 a.m. at any of those locations.
The course will familiarize participants with ocean safety and beach rescue skills. It will also be an introduction into water safety, first aid, CPR, surf rescue techniques, ocean safety awareness as well learning team work.
The week-long program is open to youth ages 12-17. There will be four sessions:
- June 19-23
- June 26-30
- July 10-14
- July 17-21
A Big Island Championship where the skills of those participants are tested will take place at Hapuna on Aug. 5.
To register, a parent or guardian must be present to sign a waiver form at the time of registration. There is a limit to 25 students per session, however, that may be adjusted on instructor availability.
Those registering are reminded to bring fins, athletic shoes, swim shorts/bathing suit, lunch, drinks, towel and sunscreen.
