Update: Portion of Kalanikoa Street in Hilo has reopened

Updated at 6:12 a.m. on May 3: A portion of Kalanikoa Street reopened after being closed for about six hours. An alert was sent out via text and email informing the public that the road was open. No details have yet been released regarding why it was closed in the first place.

More information will be provided as it becomes available.

The Hawai‘i Police Department is currently involved in police activity in the Kalanikoa Street area of Hilo on the Big Island.

Kalanikoa Street is currently closed between Pi‘ilani Street and Kuawa streets. Motorists are advised to avoid the area for the next four hours and to detour using Kanoelehua Avenue.
