Speed limit on Route 11 to increase to 45 mph through Kurtistown on Big Island

On April 6 the speed limit will go back up to 45 mph on Volcano Road through Kurtistown. Map: Big Island Now

The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation will increase the speed limit on Volcano Road (Route 11) between North Ala Road and Old Volcano Road through Kurtistown to 45 mph. 

The new speed limit will go into effect in both directions on April 6 with the installation of new signs.

The speed limit was reduced to 35 mph on Jan. 23, 2023.

But after collecting traffic data and input from the community, the Department of Transportation will reinstate the previous speed limit. This change will improve traffic flow through the area at an appropriate speed for the rural context of this section of highway.
