Police: 14 motorists arrested for DUI in last week of 2022

Big Island police arrested 14 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant during the week of Dec. 26-31, bringing the total number of DUI arrests on the island in 2022 to 979. That’s a decrease of 9.4% from 2021, which saw 1,081 DUI arrests.

Two of the drivers arrested for DUI last week were involved in traffic accidents, and two were younger than 21.

There were 846 major accidents in 2022 compared with 820 last year, an increase of 3.2%. By the end of last year, the Big Island had 32 fatal crashes resulting in 34 fatalities, an increase from the year before of 23.1% for fatal crashes and 30.8% for fatalities. In 2021, there were 26 fatal crashes resulting in 26 fatalities.
