Parks and Rec announces upcoming youth sports programs

Hawai‘i County Parks and Rec has several upcoming youth sports programs around the island.

Two track meets are scheduled in February for East and West Hawai‘i youth. The age group meet is planned for Feb. 4, with the exponent meet on Feb. 18. Events during both meets will be conducted simultaneously at 9 a.m. at the Waiākea High School Ken Yamase Stadium and the Konawaena High School Oval Track.

All meets will consist of field and running events for keiki ages 6 to 14 years old. Pre-registration is required by Jan. 20 to participate.

An organizational meeting for East Hawai‘i T-ball and Coach Pitch baseball league coaches and team representatives is scheduled for 5 p.m. Jan. 10 at Edith Kanaka‘ole Tennis Stadium in Hilo. It is mandatory for all teams interested in participating in the upcoming league to attend the meeting.

The leagues will begin play in February. The co-ed age group T-ball division is for keiki 5 and 6 years old. Children 7 and 8 years old can participate in the Coach Pitch division. The age cutoff date is May 1.

Age group boys basketball will also begin in February in North and South Kohala and Hāmākua. The league will consist of three age groups: 8-10 years old, 11-12 years old and 13-14 years old. The age cutoff date is May 1.

A mandatory organizational meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Jan. 19 at Spencer Kalani Schutte District Park in Waimea. For more information, call Jesse Liwai at 808-217-6074.
