Waipiʻo Valley Access Road remains closed as cleanup efforts continue following Kona Low

The only road in and out of the Big Island’s Waipiʻo Valley remains closed as crews with the Hawaiʻi County Department of Public Works continue their cleanup efforts following the Kona Low storm early last week.

The County plans to reopen Waipiʻo Valley Access Road to residents with valid driver’s licenses sometime Friday, weather pending, as stipulated in Mayor Mitch Roth’s Waipio Valley Road Continued Emergency Rule No. 2 and Emergency Rule No. 1. Residents of the valley and farmers needing to access their lands are allowed to access the roadway through the weather-related closure but are asked to proceed with extreme caution.

Following the cleanup, the roadway will remain under the Second Amended Traffic Emergency Zone Declaration and Second Waipiʻo Valley Road Declaration of Emergency and emergency rules will still apply.
