Kona Beth Shalom to host Chanukah Celebration

The Big Island is invited to celebrate the Season of Light later this month in West Hawai’i.

Congregation Kona Beth Shalom will host its free community Chanukah Celebration from 2 to 4 p.m. Dec. 20 at the Hawaiian Queen Coffee Garden.

Enjoy traditional holiday songs, learn to dance the “Chanukah Hula,” play the game of dreidel to win chocolate “Chanukah gelt” and join in lighting the candles in the Menorah to recall the ancient story of the Maccabees battle for religious freedom. You can even bring your own Menorah and light it together with everyone in attendance.

Live music featuring Leslie Harlib on the keyboard will be provided, and there will be ono homemade potato pancakes, or latkes, with applesauce and sour cream.

Those who attend also are encouraged to bring canned goods that will be donated to The Food Basket-Hawai‘i Island’s Food Bank.

The Hawaiian Queen Coffee Garden is located at 75-1048 Henry St. in Kailua-Kona.

The congregation asks that everyone who plans to participate is fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Portions of the event will also be live-streamed on Zoom. Connection information will be sent to the congregation email list.
