Forest reserve, trail and sanctuary to reopen after being closed because of Mauna Loa eruption
The Hawai‘i Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Forestry and Wildlife is reopening several areas two weeks after they were closed because of the volcanic activity on Mauna Loa.

The following areas will be reopened:
- Kapāpala Forest Reserve.
- ʻĀinapō Trail, road and cabin.
- Kīpuka ʻĀinahou Nēnē Sanctuary.
Kapāpala Unit J was reopened for game bird hunting Dec. 10.
Mauna Loa Forest Reserve and Mauna Loa Observatory Road remain closed because of continued volcanic hazards. The summit and all National Park Service areas on Mauna Loa also remain closed.
A gate is being constructed at the Mauna Loa Forest Reserve boundary on the access road and will be locked until further notice. The portion of Unit A South of Daniel K. Inouye Highway within the Mauna Kea Forest Reserve and Game Management Area will also remain closed for hunting until further notice.
Remember: It is illegal to cross into any closed area and violators can be cited or arrested.
