Firefighters respond to structure fire in Orchidland

Big Island firefighters responded early Thursday morning to a structure fire in the Orchidland subdivision in Puna.

Seven units and a total of 11 personnel responded at 1:30 a.m. to 16-1855 40th Ave. Upon their arrival at 1:39 a.m., firefighters found a 1,000-square-foot single-story wooden family home almost completely involved in fire. The owner of the residence was on the scene talking with officers from the Hawai‘i Police Department. No one was inside the home.

The blaze was extinguished by 2:35 a.m., with the last unit back in quarters by 3:56 a.m. The scene was turned over to police.

There were no injuries reported. The fire caused a loss of $150,000.

Police and fire inspectors are investigating to determine the cause of the fire.
