A Big Island man faces several charges stemming from a domestic-related incident in Puna.

Kim Kanakamaikai

After conferring with county prosecutors and detectives with the Hawai‘i Police Department Area I Juvenile Aid Section, police on Wednesday, Aug. 24, arrested and charged 53-year-old Kim Kanakamaikai of Hawaiian Acres with first-degree terroristic threatening, first-degree reckless endangering, ownership prohibited, felony abuse of a family household member and misdemeanor abuse of a family household member.

His bail was set at $42,000.

The charges against Kanakamaikai stem from an incident that occurred shortly before 9 p.m. Aug. 20. Puna Patrol officers responded to a residence on Ale Road in Hawaiian Acres for a reported domestic incident involving Kanakamaikai and a female. It was reported that Kanakamaikai was in possession of a handgun and was threatening the woman.

Kanakamaikai left the scene prior to police arrival; however, he was arrested Monday, Aug. 22, at the Ale Road residence.

During the course of this investigation, police determined Kanakamaikai had allegedly struck the victim, threatened her with a firearm and discharged the firearm toward her during the altercation. A search warrant was also served on the residence.
