16 Motorists Arrested For DUI

Big Island police continue their crackdown on motorists who drive under the influence of an intoxicant on island roadways.

During the week of Aug. 1-7, police arrested 16 motorists for DUI. Two of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents. One of the drivers was younger than 21.

So far this year, there have been 613 DUI arrests compared with 684 during the same period last year, a decrese of 10.4%. There have been 480 major accidents so far this year compared with 474 during the same period last year, representing an increase of 1.3%.

To date, there have been 23 fatal crashes, resulting in 25 fatalities, compared with 13 fatal crashes, resulting in 13 fatalities, during the same time period last year. This represents an increase of 76.9% for fatal crashes and 92.3% for fatalities.
