L&L restaurants nationwide next month will celebrate Hawai‘i’s favorite comfort food: SPAM.

The restaurant chain’s National SPAM Musubi Day is Aug. 8, and what better way to observe the day than with a free SPAM musubi.

“As the top seller of SPAM musubi in the continental U.S., with 20,000 SPAM musubi sold daily across 14 states, we knew the best way for us to truly celebrate National SPAM Musubi Day was to show our appreciation to everyone who already loves SPAM musubi as much as we do, or treat anyone curious to try this Hawai‘i comfort food favorite for the first time,” Elisia Flores, L&L Hawaiian Barbecue chief executive officer, said in a press release.

All you have to do to claim your free mouthwatering musubi next month is get on the restaurant’s app.

“At L&L, we love that a single bite of this tasty and popular Hawaii snack has the power to instantly transport our customers’ taste buds to the Hawaiian Islands whether they’ve already visited or have yet to experience our home state,” Flores said in the press release.

L&L Hawai‘i is also celebrating the big day with National SPAM Musubi Day merchandise. Get some fun T-shirts celebrating the day and dish, designed by noted Hawai’i-based artist Jasper Wong, or rock a pair of SPAM musubi Vans shoes. Shop L&L National SPAM Musubi Day merch here.

Many trace SPAM musubi’s invention to Hawai’i-born nutritionist and entrepreneur Barbara Funamura, who started selling it at Kaua‘i’s now-closed Joni-Hana restaurant in the early 1980s. Hawai‘i residents already loved chowing down on fried SPAM slices and rice together, so Funamura simply combined the two ingredients into one snack.
