Fire Crews Battle Brush Fire in North Kohala

A brush fire that ignited along Akoni Pule Highway on Monday has scorched 50 to 60 acres and is estimated to be 70% contained.

Hawai‘i County Civil Defense Agency issued a road closure at 3:55 p.m. alerting motorists to a road closure as a result of the blaze near mile marker 9. The road reopened at approximately 8:30 p.m.

According to Hawai‘i Fire Department, 16 units responded to the scene and stayed overnight. Crews will remain on scene throughout the day.

The cause of the fire is currently undetermined.

Fire officials also confirmed a brush fire in Waimea. It was a small fire and was put out by residents with a garden hose.
