The National Weather Service in Honolulu has extended a flood advisory for parts of East Hawaiʻi until 8 p.m. today, May 2.
At 5:16 p.m., radar and automated rain gauges indicated heavy rain over the Hilo and Puna districts. Rain was falling at a rate of 1-2 inches per hour.
Some locations that are expected to experience flooding include Hilo, Hawaiian Paradise Park, Honokaʻa, Mountain View, Keaʻau, Glenwood, Hawaiian Acres, Papaikou, Orchidlands Estates, Volcano, Pepe‘ekeō, Honomū, Hakalau, Pāhoa, Nīnole, Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, Laupāhoehoe, ʻŌʻōkala and Paʻauilo.
Residents and motorists should stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas prone to flooding.
