Kailua-Kona’s new, massive Safeway is about to welcome a new neighbor, a familiar face and a store that’s been doing business on the Big Island for 25 years.

Kona Diamond Co. will be occupying the retail space next to Safeway at 75-951 Henry St. in the new Niumalu Marketplace. It is anticipating being able to open on Wednesday.

The jewelry store is moving from the retail space just up the road on Henry Street, which Safeway used to occupy, as the two businesses were longtime neighbors before the grocery store’s departure.

“After 25 years in Kona, we are so excited to be expanding into a shiny new space that is over twice as big as our original store and full of beautiful new pieces waiting to be discovered,” the company stated in a news release announcing their new opening. “Thank you for your continued support and inquiries over the past months regarding the relocation of Kona Diamond Company – #SupportLocal!”

The company specializes in custom design, jewelry and watch repair, cleaning, appraisals and personalized shopping.

The store is also planning a grand re-opening event and party at a later date.
