Work to install underground cable is requiring a traffic shift on Kalanianaʻole Avenue in Hilo.
The state Department of Transportation said in a press release that the plan is to shift traffic at the Hawaiian Telcom roundabout pullbox location to an adjacent lane so motorists can skirt the work zone and maneuver to enter the roundabout safely. The utility work is scheduled for 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday from March 21-April 22, weather permitting.
There will not be additional lane closures or lengthening of the existing closure for the installation. The roadway is currently under construction.
The utility work is needed for fiberoptic connectivity. The work zone begins at the Hawaiian Telcom roundabout pullbox when leaving the intersection of Kamehameha Avenue (Highway 19) and Kanoelehua Avenue (Highway 11) and ends within the portion of Kalanianaʻole Avenue previously closed because of construction.

In addition, the DOT anticipates the start of a paving project between Kauhane Avenue to approximately 300 feet west of Silva Street the first two weeks of April. This will be night work, and the DOT will update the public on the schedule as that date nears.
Motorists are advised to drive with caution by following work zone signage and coning.
