The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a flood advisory for portions of the interior of the Big Island. The advisory is in effect until 7 p.m. today, March 9.

According to an alert from the NWS, at 4:04 p.m., radar indicated heavy showers over interior sections of the Big Island. Rain was falling at a rate of 1-2 inches per hour over portions of Saddle Road above Hilo and near Waimea. Some locations that will experience flooding include Hilo, Pōhakuloa Camp, Pōhakuloa Training Area and Waikiʻi.

The alert said minor flooding on roads, poor drainage areas and in streams can be expected. Residents are advised to stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas prone to flooding.

Heavy showers are expected to diminish this evening; however, the flood advisory could need to be extended if flooding persists.
