DPS: 7 Inmates, 1 Staff Member at HCCC Test Positive for COVID

The state Department of Public Safety reported Tuesday that seven inmates and one staff member at Hawai’i Community Correctional Center in Hilo have tested positive for COVID-19.

Meanwhile, the inmate population at Kulani Correctional Facility in Hilo is clear of all active COVID cases and only one of the staff members is out because of the coronavirus.

COVID-19 testing is continuously being conducted in the state’s prisons and jails as well as in the contracted Saguaro Correctional Center in Eloy, Ariz.

The latest testing updates received for the correctional facilities are as follows:

  • Hawai‘i Community Correctional Center: 14 inmate test results; seven positive, seven negative. One positive staff result reported and two staff recoveries.
  • Kulani Correctional Facility: Two inmate recoveries reported. The inmate population is clear of all active COVID-19 cases; 16 negative staff test results. Five staff recoveries reported. There is one remaining employee out because of COVID.
  • Halawa Correctional Facility (O‘ahu): 163 inmate test results; 67 positive, 96 negative. There were three positive staff results and one staff recovery reported.
  • Women’s Community Correctional Center (O‘ahu): 21 inmate test results; four positive, 17 negative.
  • O‘ahu Community Correctional Center: 29 inmate test results; two positive, 27 negative. One previously reported positive inmate was released. Four staff have recovered.
  • Kaua‘i Community Correctional Center: 14 inmate test results; two positive, 12 negative. There were two positive staff test results reported.
  • Maui Community Correctional Center: Three negative inmate test results; 37 inmates have recovered.
  • Waiawa Correctional Facility (O‘ahu): Five inmate recoveries reported.

COVID-19 updates for other PSD Divisions are as follows:

  • Sheriff Division: One positive staff test result reported and one staff recovery.
  • Administration Division: Two staff recoveries reported.

DPS continues to encourage all staff and inmates to voluntarily get tested and receive the COVID-19 vaccine.
