The Hawai‘i Police Department announced Wednesday that investigations into two recent traffic collisions will require the partial closure of two Big Island roadways on Thursday.

Partial road closures will take place Thursday on segments of Māmalahoa Highway and Queen Ka‘ahumanu Highway in South Kohala while personnel from the Area II Traffic Enforcement Unit conduct investigations. In both instances, one lane of traffic will be closed, with officers directing traffic flow in the open lane.

The first partial closure will take place between 9 and 10:30 a.m. on Queen Ka‘ahumanu Highway from the intersection with Kawaihae Road to the entrance of the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. Officers will be conducting a further investigation into a fatal crash that occurred Jan. 9.

The second partial closure will occur from noon-1 p.m. on Māmalahoa Highway between Puanuanu Place and Kekehau Street in Waimea as officers further investigate a collision that occurred Dec. 15, 2021.

Motorists are asked to drive with caution during this time and to plan ahead as drive times in these areas might take longer than usual because of the partial road closure.
