Detailed Forecast

Synopsis

Breezy easterly trade winds will continue through the weekend, with clouds and showers favoring windward and mauka areas at night and during the morning hours. A band of moisture and strong northeast winds associated with a cold front moving into the area could lead to a wet and windy pattern for the first half of next week.

Discussion

Guidance remains persistent and shows our stable trade wind pattern holding through the weekend as high pressure builds to our north. Expect brief windward and mauka showers, with light rainfall totals, as pockets of moisture move through. Trades will become locally windy as the pressure gradient remains tight, and will near the Wind Advisory threshold for windier locations in Maui County and the Big Island.
The strong trades will continue early next week as a cold front approaches and moves into the area from the north northeast. Strong winds, combined with moisture accompanying the front, will increase shower coverage Monday night through midweek. These winds will likely carry some showers into leeward areas, especially overnight through the morning periods.

Aviation

High pressure north of the state will help to generate breezy to locally windy easterly flow across the islands through the forecast period. Thus, scattered to occasional showers will mainly affect windward areas, likely bringing periods of MVFR ceilings and visibility. Partly cloudy skies with VFR conditions expected along leeward areas.
AIRMET TANGO remains in effect below 7000 feet over and immediately south through west of all mountains due to tempo moderate turbulence.
AIRMET SIERRA has been issued for north through east sections of Oahu and Maui above 2000 feet due to tempo mountain obscuration from clouds and showers.

Marine

Little change in the forecast with the morning package. Moderate to breezy trade winds will persist through much of the upcoming week. The Small Craft Advisory (SCA) is currently in effect for the typical windier waters near Maui County and the Big Island through Sunday night. An overnight ASCAT pass only clipped the eastern end of the state, but confirmed the presence of SCA near South Point. Expect the SCA to be extended into the new work week, and likely expanded to additional areas due to increasing winds and seas.
The current small north-northwest swell is expected to maintain small surf along exposed north and west facing shores this weekend. The forecast guidance continues to indicate that a new long-period north swell will likely begin to spread down over the area starting late Sunday night or early Monday morning. This swell will gradually build, and may cause surf to eventually reach the High Surf Advisory threshold along most north facing shores late Monday night into Tuesday. This will also bring SCA level seas (in excess of 10 feet) to exposed coastal waters. The locally strong trade winds in the vicinity and upstream of the islands will produce slightly elevated, rough surf along east facing shores through early next week. Small background surf along south facing shores is expected to continue to gradually lower into this weekend.
