Surfer Suffers Injuries After Shark Encounter at Banyans

A man is being treated at Kona Community Hospital after a shark encounter in Kona waters over the weekend.

According to Hawaiʻi Fire Department, a 38-year-old man surfing at Banyans Beach Park on Saturday, Dec. 4, was bitten in the left arm and shoulder. First responders arrived at the incident just after 6 p.m. Officials say there was a doctor on scene who had applied a tourniquet to the victim.

The DLNR Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement also responded to the incident. DOCARE officials say The man who encountered the shark believed it to be a great white shark, but there are no other witnesses to verify this.
