Hawaii County Police Arrest Escaped Fugitive on Big Island

An escaped fugitive on Hawai´i Island has been brought into custody.

Keahi Sale, 32, was arrested by Big Island police at about 9 a.m. in the Hilo area, according to the Hawaii Community Correctional Center (HCCC). He will be returned to the custody of HCCC after processing on a new escape charge is complete.

Sale was discovered missing during a 10:25 p.m. headcount on Friday and was on the run for approximately three days.

Sale was serving time for first-degree burglary, first-degree terroristic threatening, kidnapping and second-degree sex assault. His next parole hearing was scheduled for March 2022. He was a community custody inmate up until Friday which is the lowest classification level, police said.

Hale Nani, HCCC’s reintegration program, is an open dorm-style building located in Panaewa. It is from this facility that Sale escaped. Hale Nani offers offenders reintegration services and a work release program for sentenced inmates who will be released on the Big Island, HCCC said.
