The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a flood advisory for areas of East Hawaiʻi in effect until 7 p.m.

At 3:59 p.m., radar indicated heavy rain and thunderstorms over the slopes above Hilo, with the heavy rain slowly drifting downslope. Rain was falling at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour, and will lead to poor visibility, especially on Saddle Road.

Some locations that will experience flooding include Hilo, Hawaiian Paradise Park, Mountain View, Keaʻau, Glenwood, Hawaiian Acres, Orchidlands Estates, Volcano, Papaikou, Pepeʻekeo, Honomu, Pāhoa, Hakalau, Ninole, Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, Laupahoehoe, Kurtistown, Wainaku and Fern Acres.

Minor flooding on roads, poor drainage areas, and in streams is expected. Stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas prone to flooding.
