A 37-year-old Ocean View man suffered severe injuries following a two-vehicle collision Saturday at the intersection of Plumeria Lane and Coconut Drive in Hawaiian Ocean View Estates.

The man was identified as Jason Oliveira Kanakamaikai.

Responding to a 9 a.m. call, Hawaii Police Department officers determined a green 2002 Honda Rancher ATV heading northeast on Coconut Drive failed to stop at the intersection of Plumeria Lane and sideswiped a green 2000 Dodge van that was heading south. The rider of the ATV was then ejected.

Kanakamaikai was transported to Kona Community Hospital for initial treatment and was later transported to the Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu. He is currently listed in critical condition.

The driver of the Dodge van, a 65-year-old man, and his 64-year-old and 68-year-old woman passengers, all from Ocean View, were not injured in the crash.

Police think speed and impairment are possible factors in the collision.

The crash is being investigated by the HPD Area II Traffic Enforcement Unit. Anyone who might have witnessed the accident is asked to contact Officer Jason Foxworthy at 808-326-4646, extension 229, or via email at Jason.foxworthy@hawaiicounty.gov.
