HPD Renews Request for Help in Unsolved Puna Murder

Authorities are renewing a request for information about an unsolved murder that occurred in July 2021 in Puna.

On July 31, 2021, the body of 76-year-old Michael Rosenbaum was discovered at MacKenzie State Recreation Area. Rosenbaum had been reported as a missing person on July 24, 2021. He was reportedly last seen alive on July 22, in Pāhoa town.

Rosenbaum’s body was found by a local fisherman on the cliffs below the beach park. An autopsy later concluded that Rosenbaum died from a gunshot wound.

The Area I Criminal Investigation Section is continuing this investigation which is classified as a second-degree murder.

Anyone who may have information relative to this investigation, or who may have seen Rosenbaum in the latter part of July, is asked to call Hawai’i Police Department’s non-emergency number at 808-935-3311, or Detective Jeremy Kubojiri of the Area I Criminal Investigation Section at 808-961-2378 or send an email at [email protected].

Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call the island-wide Crime Stoppers number at 808-961-8300 and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
