Hawaii Island Police have identified the victim of a single-vehicle crash that occurred on Thursday morning, Oct. 7, 2021.

HPD officers said that 22-year-old Isaac Gideon, of Kailua-Kona, died following the incident near the 4 mile-marker on Pu‘u Honua Road in Nāpo‘opo‘o.

Responding to a 2:04 a.m. call, police determined that a white 1996 Honda Accord heading south ran off of the roadway and lost control. The vehicle then struck several large rocks and the driver was ejected. Gideon was transported to the Kona Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 8:53 a.m.

Gideon was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash. Police believe that speed and impairment are possible factors in the crash, according to an official report.
