Hawai‘i Island police have arrested two Hawai’i Community Correctional Center (HCCC) inmates for second-degree escape.

The inmates have been identified as 23-year-old Jaymeson Kaimana Makio, of Honoka‘a, and 21-year-old Camilo Darien Moreno, of Holualoa.

On Sept. 29, 2021, shortly before 3:30 a.m., HCCC personnel reported that two inmates were unaccounted for and had not been seen since approximately 2 a.m.

South Hilo Patrol officers immediately began canvassing the area surrounding the jail, as well as the downtown Hilo area. Shortly after 3:30 a.m., officers located the escapees at the Mooheau Bus terminal. Police determined that Makio had just boarded a Hele-On bus and Moreno was in the process of boarding the bus. Both escapees were arrested without incident.

Makio had been incarcerated at HCCC for probation violation offenses, and Moreno was incarcerated as a pre-trial felon for robbery, assault, and theft-related offenses.

Detectives with the Area I Criminal Investigation Section are continuing this investigation to determine how the inmates were able to escape the facility and to account for their whereabouts from the time they escaped until their apprehension.
