Major Accidents, DUI Counts Both Up Over Last Year

Hawai‘i Island police arrested 18 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant over the previous week. Two of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. One of the drivers was under the age of 21.  

So far this year, there have been 757 DUI arrests compared with 652 during the same period last year, an increase of 16.1%.

There have been 552 major accidents so far this year compared with 534 during the same period last year, an increase of 3.4%. 

To date, there have been 16 fatal crashes resulting in 16 fatalities compared with 13 fatal crashes resulting in 13 fatalities for the same time last year. This represents an increase of 23.1% for fatal crashes and 23.1% for fatalities.
