Three people and a dog were rescued off of Hilo Bay after a boat they were on started to sink Saturday afternoon.

At 12:51 p.m., Hawai‘i Fire Department received a report of a small recreational dingy-type vessel partially submerged was approximately 100 yards offshore with the victims in the water.

When first responders arrived on scene, they were able to keep an eye on the three people and their dog while the rescue boat and SKI-1 launched from Wailoa Harbor.

Once SKI-1 got to the victims, they were transferred from their sinking vessel to the rescue boat.

The boat was then towed to the nearby sandy shoreline, and the occupants were taken to Wailoa Harbor for evaluation by Medic 1.

“HFD would like to remind all boat captains to provide life vests for all aboard their boats,” HFD stated.
